TOEFL/IELTS Prep

In order to be accepted into many English speaking academic and professional institutions around the world, you must show proficiency in English. The two main tests that are accepted by most institutions are TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) and IELTS (International English Learning Testing System). IELTS is also used by many English speaking countries as a way to measure English levels of people who want to immigrate.

TOEFL is an online-based test (select areas have written tests) that gauges the level of proficiency of the test-taker. It is accepted by over 9,000 different institutions, colleges, and agencies from all over the world. The test itself consists of four parts: reading, listening, speaking, and writing.

  • Reading: Test-takers are given 3-4 texts on academic topics and must answer 12-14 questions following each one.

  • Listening: Test-takers are given 6 passages (3-5 minutes long) that are a mixture of lectures and conversations between two people. All of them relate to a university setting and have 5-6 questions afterwards.

  • Speaking: Test-takers must answer questions based on a combination of spoken and written passages.

  • Writing: Test-takers must write a summary of spoken/written passages and write an essay based on a given prompt.

IELTS is a written test that is used mainly for academic institutions, professional purposes, and immigrating to English speaking countries. There are 2 types of tests, IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training. Each test focuses on more relevant things for the test-taker.

Both tests consist of 4 parts: listening, reading, writing, and speaking. The listening and speaking sections are the same for both tests, but the reading and writing sections differ in content and tasks based on which test is being taken.

  • Listening: Test-takers listen to 4 different passages and answer questions about each one.

  • Reading: There are 3 sections with texts to read, and test-takers must answer questions about each text.

  • Writing: Test-takers have two different writing tasks, the first one involves writing at least 150 words and the second must be at least 250 words.

  • Speaking: This section consists of a one-on-one interview with an examiner. The test-taker must be able to introduce themselves, talk about a given topic, and be able to answer questions on the spot.
